Gunmen killed at least 14 people Tuesday in an attack on a village in northeastern Kenya.

The Kenya Red Cross said at least 11 others were wounded in the shootings in Soko Mbuzi, located near Kenya's border with Somalia. Officials said the victims were quarry workers.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Somalia-based al-Shabab militants have carried out multiple attacks in Kenya since Kenyan troops joined the effort in Somalia to battle the al-Qaida-linked fighters in 2011.

Those attacks have included several high-profile events, including militants killing 148 people at a university in Garissa in April and killing at least 67 people at a Nairobi mall in 2013.
