At least 15 people were killed Sunday in Egypt as protesters marked the anniversary of a deadly 2011 uprising that ousted long-time leader Hosni Mubarak.

Egyptian media reports dozens more were injured in clashes between security forces and demonstrators in Cairo and at least two other cities.

Most of the deaths were in Cairo's Matariya district, an Islamist stronghold where police confronted supporters of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

Violence began Saturday, when police fatally shot activist Shaimaa al-Sabbagh in Cairo as she walked toward Cairo's Tahrir Square to honor the protesters killed on January 25, 2011.

Scores of protesters were killed during last year's anniversary.
